Single father JaQuan Reynolds knew his life would change when he drops his daughter off for her freshman year at Howard University but wasn't expecting the adjustment to being an empty-nester to fall at the same time as the biggest deal on the shortest deadline of his career. Adding to the upheaval, the consultant on the account, Matthew Donaldson, is a cranky workaholic whom JaQuan finds irritatingly handsome. Since his divorce, Matt's life has centered on the long hours of his demanding job and raising his two children. With the wedding of Matt's eldest son looming in the middle of the deadline there isn't much time for him and Jaq to act on the sparks flying between them. However, as they spend more and more late nights butting heads in the office, the connection becomes impossible to resist and they begin to see eye to eye on more than just business. VERDICT Ellis (Jeremiah) delivers a satisfying, sensual queer Black romance and happily ever after for two men struggling to balance career obligations and familial responsibilities. Ellis (Jeremiah) pairs up two single fathers who’ve just sent their daughters to college in her sensuous first Higher Education romance. JaQuan Reynolds was a teenage father, and ever since his daughter, Tanisha, was born his life has been devoted solely to her and his work. As the assistant to eccentric and demanding designer Patti, Jaq is on call at all times. When Patti gets the opportunity to design a line of home goods for Bernhardt department stores, Bernhardt representative Matt Donaldson arrives to manage the project. Jaq is immediately attracted to Matt, but is put off by his demanding, uptight demeanor. Workaholic Matt returns Jaq’s attraction, but his bisexuality is new to his family, his three grown kids having only seen him with his ex-wife. As Jaq and Matt work together and bond over their newly empty nests, their attraction turns to more—but Matt must learn to step back from work to make room for happiness. The endearing, often erotic story of two men finding love later in life will fill readers’ hearts.
