In her senior year of college, asha bandele and a group of other writers went to a prison to read their works for a Black History Month program. There, she met Rashid, a man who was serving 20 to life for murder, a man who spoke softly and wisely, a man who would become asha's soul mate. This is her account of a relationship that has thrived despite terrific odds. "This is a romantic but realistic story, told with a directness and honesty that makes us know that however impossible the problems asha and Rashid face, we can question neither her motives nor sanity."-Booklist, starred review

Poet asha bandele joins a group of students in a program that interacts with prisoners. There she meets and ultimately marries a man who is still serving a sentence of 20 years to life for murder. Myra Lucretia Taylor gives bandele a voice that is gentle, compelling, youthful, and intelligent, so that from the very beginning the listener feels a bond with this young woman. This is very important; otherwise, her decisions would not be just incomprehensible, they would also be unacceptable. This is not easy listening, but Taylor makes it a memorable narrative for our time. P.R. (c) AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine
