Dante passes through the gate of hell, on which is inscribed the famous phrase "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate", or "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here". He and his guide then see a succession of damned and 'lost souls' who flounder in an array of terrible torments, and Dante begins to realise that life may not be such a bad deal after all...
